Mexico City World Cup 2026 — Airport to Estadio Azteca

Estadio Azteca hosts the tournament’s opening match on June 11 — the first stadium ever to stage matches at three different World Cups. At 2,240 m altitude on the city’s gridlocked south side, the Tren Ligero light rail is the smart way in.

Rideshare pickup

Uber and DiDi both operate in Mexico City. On match days, security cordons keep cars a few hundred metres from the gates — pre-book in the app and walk the final stretch. Afterward, walk 10–15 minutes from the stadium before requesting a pickup; surge and waits are extreme at the perimeter, especially for the June 11 opener.

Public transit

The cheapest, most reliable route is Metro Line 2 (Blue) south to Tasqueña, then the Tren Ligero light rail to its dedicated Estadio Azteca station, steps from the gates. Total fare is about 8 MXN (under $0.50). The light rail runs extra frequency on event days.

Traffic to expect

Estadio Azteca sits on Calzada de Tlalpan in the south of the city, which gridlocks for 2–3 km each way on match days; Periférico Sur and Insurgentes Sur also back up, with perimeter closures 3–4 hours before kickoff. The stadium is at 2,240 m altitude — pace yourself.

Local match-day tips for Mexico City

  • Take the Tren Ligero from Tasqueña — it terminates at a platform built for Azteca crowds and is the only consistently reliable option on sold-out match days.
  • Fly into MEX (Benito Juárez), ~22 km away — not Felipe Ángeles (NLU), which is ~73 km on the opposite side of the metro area.
  • Stay in Coyoacán, Roma, or Condesa to shorten the Metro ride; avoid the far north on match days.
  • Altitude is real at 2,240 m — hydrate and pace yourself on arrival day.
